In the next 90 days, the Obama administration hopes to cure a problem that has festered for years: the failure of federal agencies to award small businesses their fair share of government contracts.
In fiscal 2008, only 21.5% of federal prime contracting dollars went to small businesses - well below the government's 23% goal. Failing to hit this goal cost small businesses more than $6.5 billion in federal contracts. (August 28, 2009 - Dallas Business Journal)

Technology clusters are developing in Fargo and Sioux Falls and high-tech employment has also recently increased in Bismarck, Rapid City, SD, Minot, ND, and Grand Forks, ND. The global recession has led to IT worker layoffs in the region at firms like Microsoft and the closings of Alien Technology Corporation's Fargo plant and the Hutchinson Technology Inc. plant in Sioux Falls earlier this year. Minnesota's manufacturing sector, which has slashed jobs and factory output to survive the recession, is finally beginning to recover.
