Small business losing billions in federal work
In the next 90 days, the Obama administration hopes to cure a problem that has festered for years: the failure of federal agencies to award small businesses their fair share of government contracts.

In fiscal 2008, only 21.5% of federal prime contracting dollars went to small businesses - well below the government's 23% goal. Failing to hit this goal cost small businesses more than $6.5 billion in federal contracts.

Region experiencing technology growth
Technology clusters are developing in Fargo and Sioux Falls and high-tech employment has also recently increased in Bismarck, Rapid City, SD, Minot, ND, and Grand Forks, ND. The global recession has led to IT worker layoffs in the region at firms like Microsoft and the closings of Alien Technology Corporation's Fargo plant and the Hutchinson Technology Inc. plant in Sioux Falls earlier this year. Despite the setbacks, the region still appears to be well positioned for long-term technology growth.

Local CFOs expect hiring to increase in Q4
Twin Cities chief financial officers expect hiring of full-time accounting and finance professionals to increase in the fourth quarter of 2009, according to the latest Robert Half International Financial Hiring Index.

Minnesota manufacturers start to snap back
Minnesota's manufacturing sector, which has slashed jobs and factory output to survive the recession, is finally beginning to recover.

The economic improvement is charted in a Creighton University survey of supply managers released Tuesday that shows the manufacturing climate turned the corner in August.

To Slim Down, Businesses Team Up
...as the economy continues to soften, many small businesses - even those that have been around for decades - are not only trading services, but also combining forces, says Jeffrey Carr, the executive director of New York University's Berkley Center for Entrepreneurial Studies.

According to the National Small Business Association's mid-year Economic Report released in July, 27% of business owners surveyed said that they're planning to use strategic alliances to expand their businesses over the next year.

Entrepreneurs flocking to SBA events seeking funding
The No. 1 question fielded by the Small Business Administration's Philadelphia District Office used to be whether there were any grants to start a new business. Now it's: How do I get a slice of the $787 billion federal stimulus pie? District Director David Dickson said.
Nationwide, SBA events are swelling with entrepreneurs seeking an answer to the same. More events are on the way locally in months to come as part of a governmentwide initiative of the SBA and Commerce Department to increase minority, women, veteran, and small business owners' participation in federal contracts.
