Minnesota reports mixed employment figures
Minnesota's unemployment rate fell a tenth of a percentage point last month, even as employers in the state shed 10,300 more jobs, according to numbers out Thursday from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.

The state's unemployment rate was 8 percent in August, down from 8.1 percent in July. The U.S. unemployment rate, meanwhile, climbed three-tenths of a point to 9.7 percent.

"The road to economic recovery will lead us through many twists and turns," DEED Commissioner Dan McElroy said in a news release. "I am encouraged to see the gap between Minnesota's and the nation's unemployment rates widening, suggesting that the state may experience an earlier economic rebound."

TECHNOLOGY
Businesses warming to social media sites, but practical uses still elusive
What started out as a way for kids to communicate online is fast becoming an integral part of how a lot of companies do business.

Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, which two or three years ago were the exclusive domain of individuals, now feature sites from both large and small businesses looking for an edge in the ever-changing competitive environment. More business-oriented sites, such as LinkedIn, are becoming more of a marketing domain for individuals looking for connections to business partners or new jobs.

But the issue a lot of these companies now are facing concerns the type of content offered and how to take full advantage of the growing cyberspace nation.

SMALL BUSINESS RESOURCES
Small business start-up: Ideas come from all over
Interestingly, most solid, profitable businesses are developed from rather mundane ideas.  While it might take a Levi Strauss to invent blue jeans or a Steve Jobs to create a personal computer, you can make money selling those jeans or providing services for those computers.

Granted, if you're looking for a huge investment from professional venture capital firms, you'll probably need a big, bold market-changing idea. But most of us aren't trying to start huge multinational enterprises; we just want solid, profitable companies or a decent income. Even knowing that, however, it's easy to get stuck figuring out which way to turn.

Readers of The Planning Shop e-mail newsletter told us where they found inspiration for their businesses. While the survey was not statistically weighted, the results illustrate where entrepreneurs who are probably a lot like you got their ideas.
