We have endured the longest, deepest and broadest recession in more than 60 years. In 2008, housing starts fell to the lowest level since World War II. This year, they are on track to fall by another 40 percent. Auto sales in 2009, even after the boost provided by the cash for clunkers program, are expected to be at their lowest level since 1970. Previous recessions skipped over some regions or sectors. This time no pocket of the economy remains untouched. Times have been so bad that economists now refer to the past 20 months as "the Great Recession."
Unfortunately, there are signs that the coming recovery will not be great enough to move the economy quickly back to normal. (September 12, 2009 - startribune.com)

Two Texas markets will be the first to recover from the recession, says a nationwide forecast by IHS Global Insight. Austin and San Antonio will bounce back to their pre-recession job levels sometime next year, according to the economic forecasting firm, which is based in Lexington, Mass.
Eight other metropolitan areas are predicted to recover by 2011, a group that includes Texas' two largest markets, Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston, along with Washington, D.C. IHS Global Insight says that most metros will start adding employment next year, but the increases are likely to be tepid. "Solid gains will not return for the majority of the country until 2011," it says.
At the bottom of the scale are five Northeastern and Midwestern industrial markets that are expected to remain in the doldrums for several years. IHS Global Insight predicts that Cleveland, Detroit, Hartford, Milwaukee and Providence won't wipe out the remnants of the recession until sometime after 2015.

The origin of the word is entreprendre, French for "to undertake." Notice that this word emphasizes an attempt to act, and not the outcome of that action: You undertake something, and the implication is that what matters is that you have started on a journey and accepted that it's an open-ended one. Someone who needs an extremely high level of security might be challenged by an entrepreneurial lifestyle, yet a lot of people who don't think of themselves as embracing risk become entrepreneurs.
The key is that although a successful entrepreneur takes risks, those risks are measured. Though entrepreneurs frequently go out on limbs, the ones that make it generally test that limb first to make sure it has a good chance of bearing their weight.
Entrepreneurship can be applied to virtually any field or profession. No matter what products and services are currently on the market in your area of expertise, there are always opportunities to improve them and to better serve the customers who buy them. That said, if you're a true entrepreneur, you likely possess the following key characteristics: (September 16, 2009 - The News-Press) |
