The Minneapolis-St. Paul economy was the nation's 14th largest, generating a gross metropolitan product of $193.9 billion in 2008, according to a new report from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Employers cut back on their job cutting last month with private payrolls recording a loss of 254,000 positions in September, according to a report by payroll firm ADP released Wednesday. The loss of 254,000 jobs was the sixth straight month of declining job losses reported by ADP.
...On Wednesday, the Commerce Department reported that U.S. gross domestic product shrank at an annualized rate of 0.7 percent in the second quarter, lower than a previously reported 1 percent decline and well ahead of the 6.4 percent contraction of the first quarter. Many analysts believe that increased government spending in the third quarter on programs such as Cash For Clunkers will return the economy to growth in the third quarter. Grants from foundations and other donors can make a real difference when strong partnerships with nonprofits are formed, according to a report out Wednesday from the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy.
The Washington, D.C.-based watchdog group studied a sample of 15 nonprofits in Minnesota from 2004 to 2008, and concluded that every $1 in donations resulted in a $138 return in long-term benefits for Minnesotans and their communities. (September 30, 2009 - Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal)
